Chapter Summaries

136 days before:
Miles Halter is an unpopular boy from Florida that wants to go to boarding school in Alabama. Miles Parents plan a going away party only to have two people show up. Miles then explains why he wants to move to Culver Creek Boarding School.


128 days before:
Miles moves into his new dorm room and meets his roommate, Chip Martin. Chip explains that he prefers to be called “the Colonel” and gives Miles the nickname “Pudge”. The Colonel takes Miles to meet a girl across the hall named Alaska and to get some cigarettes (which Miles never smoked until that day). The Colonel explains to Miles who the Eagle is. The Eagle (Mr.Starness) is the one who watches over all the students and make sure they don’t do any funny business.


127 days before:
The Colonel introduces Miles to a group of 5 guys but only registers one name, Takumi. Miles is woken up in the middle of the night by a group of (Weekday Warrior) boys. The boys drag miles to the lake, duct tape him from neck to toe and throw him into the lake. The Colonel gets angry when he finds out what happened.
126 days before:
School finally begins. Takumi and The Colonel take a seat beside Miles in Dr. Hyde’s World Religions class. The Colonel asks Miles to point out the boys that tossed him in the lake.

122 days before:

Miles experiences the dysfunctional couple of The Colonel and Sara as they scream  and fight from the moment Sara shows up for their date. After arguing and cancelling the date, The Colonel finally provides some information on their relationship to Miles.

110 days before:

Miles andAlaska get kicked out of religions class; so Alaska picks clovers while Miles attempts to but ends up staring at her breasts. Miles, the Colonel, Alaska and Takumi go down to the smoking hole after class where the group talk about "the Marya situation" and Takumi raps.

109 days before:

Miles goes to his first Culver Creek Basketball game with the Colonel where Kevin Richman comes up to them asking for a truce on the whole ducktape thing but Miles and the Colonel refuse to truce.

101 days before:

Miles wakes up feeling cold. Alaska drives Miles and some other kids to McDonalds at lunch to study, Miles is introduced to Lara

100 days before:

Alaska explains to Miles why she has the name Alaska. The two talk in the TV room.

99 days before:

The Eagle catches Alaska, the Colonel, Takumi and Miles smoking.

98 days before:

Miles, The Colonel, Alaska and Takumi go on "trial" for smoking. Alaska and the Colonel take the blame.

89 days before:
52 days before:
4 days before:


Alaska plans a triple date for her and Jake, the Colonel and Sara, and Miles and Lara.


87 days before:

Lara, Miles, the Colonel, Sara, Alaska, Jake and Takumi go on a triple-and-a-half date to a basketball game where Miles gets hit in the head with a basketball and gets a concussion. Sara breaks up with the Colonel

84 days before:

It begins to rain heavily. Both the Colonel and Alaska seem very under the weather.

76 days before:

Dr. Hyde assigns the paper topic for the semester: What is the most important question human beings must answer? Alaska get her room flooded by the weekday warriors.

67 days before:

Takumi tells Miles that it was Alaska that ratted out Marya for breaking the rules back then and why she did it. Miles then realizes why Alaska took the fall for that day at the Jury; Alaska wanted Miles to trust her.

58 days before:

miles asks his parents if he could stay at Culver creek for Thanksgiving with his friends (I.e. Alaska) but he later regrets making that decision and calls his parents back to say he changed his mind but his parents had bought tickets to England already.

Everyone leaves for Thanksgiving so Alaska and Miles share a bottle of wine as well as an intimate moment on the soccer field and Alaska describes what "The Labyrinth" is.


51 days before:

Miles and Alaska sneak into the weekday warriors room and devise a plan to get back at them for what they had done.

49 days before:

Alaska takes Miles to go "porn hunting" in the other students dorm rooms.

47 days before:

the colonel drives all the way back to Culver Creek from his home to get Alaska and miles and take them back to his home for thanksgiving (2 hours away). Miles meets the colonel's Mom.
days before:

46 days before:

Miles, Alaska, the colonel and his mom, Dolores, have Thanksgiving together then drive back to Culver Creek.

44 days before:

Alaska and Miles go to get cigarettes and alcohol. Alaska later shows up at Miles' door a sobbing mess, explaining that she told the Colonel that she ratted on Marya and goes on about other things as well.

Christmas:

Miles goes back home for the holidays.

8 days before:

Alaska and the Colonel talk about the "pre-prank" but doesnt say anything to Miles just yet. She does tell him that it will be happening on the weekend and that him, Lara, Takumi, the Colonel and Alaska are going to be staying in the barn for the weekend of the prank.

Alaska and colonel plan the "pre-prank" excludind miles, giving him time to study for his finals


3 days before:

the colonel, Alaska, miles, takumi and Laura meet up at the Barn and execute the "pre-prank". The eagle is woken up by fireworks, Kevin and his minions get blue dye placed into their hair products, the weekdays warriors parents might get a notice saying their children are failing.

2 days before:

Alaska makes a drinking game for Lara, Takumi, the Colonel, Miles and herself called "the best and worst day ever". The group bond for the entire day and Miles asks Lara to be his girlfriend.

1 day before:

Lara, Takumi, Alaska, the Colonel and Miles return to campus.

The last Day:

Miles spends the afternoon with Lara. While watching "The Brady Bunch" in the TV room, Lara and Miles engage in oral sex. Later that night, the Colonel and Alaska get roaring drunk to celebrate their Barn Night success, Miles is with them but decides not to drink. Alaska asks Miles to hook up with him but she gets tired and goes to sleep, saying "to be continued?". Alaska wakes up in the middle of the night upset and drunk, insisting that she needs to leave right away. So she does. 

The day after: 

The Eagle gathers all the students together in the gym to announce that Alaska had died in a terrible car accident.

2 days after:

Everyone tries to cope with the sudden loss. The Colonel gets frustrated and angry and decides to go for a walk.

4 days after:

The Colonel returns from his 84 mile walk.

6 days after:

The students go to Alaska's funeral in Alabama. Lara the Colonel, Takumi and miles go separately and arrive early and meet a man.

7 days after:

The colonel and Miles go to clear out some items from Alaska's room. Upon looking through a book called "The General In His Labrinth", one of Alaska's favourite books, Miles finds writing beside the line "'Damn it,' he sighed 'how will i ever get out of this labrinth!'" that reads straight and fast.

8 days after:

Class begins once again. In religion class with Dr. Hyde, many classmates express their condolences, which the Colonel feels is a load of crap.

9 days after:

The Colonel comes up with a theory as to what happened with Alazke that night and discusses it with Miles.

13 days after:

The Colonel and Miles go to the Pelham Police Station to look for possible answers towards Alaska's death.

14 days after: the Colonel and Miles look into the possibility of a suicide but later conclude that that wasn't the case. Holly Moser, a weekday warrior, shows up at their door insisting that Alaska was trying to speak to her, which infuriated the Colonel after she left.


20 days after:

The Colonel and Miles have a fight because Miles doesn't want answers but the Colonel insists it. Angry and Frustrated, Miles goes to the smoking hole, reminiscing on Alaska.

21 days after:

Mr. Hyde talks about Sufism and about Rabe'a al-Adiwiya, someone Miles though Alaska would've really liked. Miles and Takumi later go to McDonalds for lunch.
days after:

27 days after:

Miles and the Colonel steal a breathalyzer from the Eagle's house. Miles gets the colonel to a blood-alcohol level of 0.24 to test out what condition Alaska was in that night. the Eagle almost catches them at one point but Miles quickly comes up with a plan to avoid getting in major trouble but does end up having to go to the jury.

28 days after:

The Colonel manages to get to his classes, still drunk. The Colonel explains everything that has happened between him Alaska and Miles.

29 days after:

The Colonel talks to Jake to see if Alaska was going to see Jake that night. Jake said that when he called her she never said she was going to go see him and that was acting perfectly fine and that she told him she had been doodling when she suddenly started freaking and said she had to go.

37 days after:

Miles runs into Lara between class, they have not talked in a long while and the only words that were said was "I'm sorry"

45 days after:

Takumi, the Colonel and Miles go to get cigarettes from "Coosa Liquors".

46 days after:

Miles finally talks and apologizes to Lara. Takumi, Lara, Miles and the Colonel go to the smoking hole to try to figure out what happened but don't get far.

51 days after:

The investigation stalls, in religions class, Dr. Hyde teaches the students that everything will fall apart; objects animals, memories, etc.

 62 days after:

Miles calls his mom and notices some white daisies scribbled onto the payphone. He then realizes that that what Alaska was doodling when she realized she forgot something and freaked out.

69 days after:

The Colonel and Miles discuss doing a prank in memory of Alaska. The Colonel suggest doing Alaskas prank she wanted to do for a senior prank she called "Subverting the Patriarchal Paradigm"

83 days after:

After much plannig, the Colonel gets his plan prepared to the T. The Barn night crew (minus one) get back together and discuss.

84 days after:

Miles gets his dad to pretend that he is a Dr. William Morse, a professor of psychology from Florida and an expert in adolescent understandings of sexuality that will be presenting on "Speaker Day" as part of the plan.

102 days after:

For the prank, the juniors all chipped in five dollars to pay for a male stripper and had the stripper pose as Dr. William Morse and give a speech until given the cue to rip his clothes off and dance. 

114 days after:

 Takumi and the Colonel come up with a theory that while Alaska was drawing the daisies, she remembered how her mom put them into her hair when she was little and then she freaked out because she forgot the anniversary of her mom's death so she books it down the highway on her way to her grave and drives into the police car.

118 days after:

The Colonel and Miles drive through the scene of the accident.

119 days after:

The Colonel, Miles, Lara and Takumi study hard for their finals.

122 days after:

Dr. Hyde gives the question for the students final papers, how will you ever get out of this labyrinth of suffering?

136 days after:

School is coming to a close and finals have finished. Miles gets a note from Takumi saying that he too saw Alaska on the day of her death. Miles writes his way out of the labyrinth.
